Pre-requisite qualifications

SOEE1301 Intermediate Mathematics for Environmental and Geophysical Scientists. Students who have not taken SOEE1301 but have A-level pure maths, further maths or equivalent may take this module with approval from the module leader and relevant programme manager.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate in depth mathematical knowledge of the following topics:
1) Partial derivatives and extrema of a function
2) Vector calculus, including divergence, curl, and gradient.
3) Solve basic partial differential equations.
4) Fourier Analysis.
5) Introduction to multi-dimensional integration.

Skills outcomes

Emphasis in this module is on numeracy.
Analysis of mathematical problems;
- recognising and using subject-specific theories, paradigms, concepts and principles to solve problems;
- application of theories to unfamiliar problems; and
- general refinement of mathematical logic.
Developing the skills necessary for self-managed and lifelong learning (e.g. working independently, time management and organisation skills).
